Fans will see less of Floriana Lima’s Maggie Sawyer in Season 3 of “Supergirl.”

According to TVLine, Lima — who was a series regular in the recently concluded Season 2 of the CW series — will only recur in Season 3.

In a statement sent to the website, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed the reason behind the actress’ decision to step down as series regular. “We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story [of Maggie and Alex’s (Chyler Leigh) romance],” Kreisberg said. “Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season, as she’s looking to pursue other opportunities, we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.”

Lima made her debut appearance as Maggie in Season 2, episode 3. Introduced as a police detective of the National City Police Department and a member of the Science Police, Maggie eventually became Alex’s girlfriend. At the end of the Season 2 finale, Alex asked Maggie to marry her. But instead of giving Alex an actual answer, Maggie simply smiled. Does Maggie’s reaction mean she knows something about her future the viewers don’t know yet?

While it is unclear how Lima’s recurring status would ultimately affect the show’s Alex-Maggie storyline, Lima told People at the 28th GLAAD Media Awards ceremony last month that she’s “really humbled [and] very proud” of how significant Alex and Maggie’s relationship has become to viewers who are struggling with their sexuality.

“But I think what’s important is just to show this as a relationship and not to focus fully on the fact that these are two gay women,” Lima told TVLine earlier this month. “We want to treat it and give it as much thought as any other relationship, right, but also be mindful that we are representing a community that needs more representation. We want to get it right, and we want to really think things through.”
