A surfer has died following a shark attack on the Gold Coast of Australia. The victim, who is believed to be a 46-year-old male, was treated by paramedics after suffering severe injuries to the leg and groin areas before he was pronounced dead.

Australia’s 7 News reported the incident took place around 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta. The victim was believed to be surfing when he was attacked by the shark

Jade Parker, the man who saw the victim floating in the water, attempted to pull the male from the water after realizing he was injured. “I spotted a board floating in the (surfing) line up, and a body was next to it,” he told the outlet.

“I just presumed he might have got knocked out because he wasn’t moving in the water. I ran down to the beach, dropped my board and sort of trudged through the line up to get to him.”

By the time Parker got closer to the body, three others had arrived in an effort to assist with a rescue. Although the shark was nowhere to be found, birds could be seen circling around the body.

Parker explained that it was difficult for others to understand what was going on and that many people were unaware there had been an actual shark attack.

However, since Parker was walking along the footpath around Greenmount Hill, which overlooks the water, he was able to look down and get a better view.

For the most part, Parker admitted that he felt safe at the beach prior to the incident. Despite the recent attack, Parker revealed that there are bait hooks in the water, and he has only seen sharks in the surf line up on rare occasions.

The death of the male surfer marks the first shark attack on the Gold Coast since 2012 when a 20-year-old suffered non-fatal injuries from an attack at Nobbys Beach.
