Tonight’s Season 1 finale of “Taken” is going to change Bryan Mills (Clive Standen) forever.

“The very last frame of the first season leaves Bryan in a very, very awkward predicament,” Standen teased during a recent interview with Global News. “Awkward isn’t the right word … [but] the way it ends, Bryan will never be the same.”

Standen added that his way of investing in his character on the NBC series is like a “marathon,” and “not a sprint.” “I wanted to start Season 1 of ‘Taken’ just like I did with [the role of] Rollo on ‘Vikings’: he is not the finished article,” the Northern Irish actor said.

Although “Taken” the TV series is a prequel of sorts to the film series of the same name starring Liam Neeson, Standen said that his version of the character is “definitely not anything like the Bryan Mills of the movie” yet. “That’s where I’m going to end up,” Standen explained. “The start of that character is the very last episode of Season 1. I wanted him to be a man without the answer to everything. Where we end in Season 1, there’s no going back for him.”

In the finale, Bryan embarks on a mission to save his girlfriend, Asha (Brooklyn Sudano), who was abducted by Carlos Mejia’s (Romano Orzari) men last episode. Bryan’s mission, however, won’t be easy, as his colleagues at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) are going to stop him from further pursuing Mejia.

In a sneak peek from the finale, Gary Martello (Matthew Bennett) of the FBI pays Christina Hart (Jennifer Beals) a visit to tell her that ODNI is no longer responsible for Mejia. “What is he doing in Texas?” Gary asks Christina as he shows a surveillance photo of Bryan holding a man at gunpoint.

“He’s trying to stop Mejia from crossing the border,” Christina replies.

When Gary tells Hart to take Bryan out of Mejia’s case, Christina explains that the FBI and the ODNI’s interests are not different from one another. “What’s the priority here? Finding Mejia and the hostage or busting mid-level dealer?” Christina asks. “Our interests is the same as yours.”

“He’s a loose cannon and he’s done,” Gary says of Bryan. “So tie him down before I do. You, people, are finish with Mejia. This is an FBI operation.”

“When is that your decision to make?” Christina asks.

“It’s a direct order from the White House,” Gary reveals.

In another sneak peek from the episode, ODNI reunites with Bryan in Texas, and Christina tries to convince him to go home with them. “Bryan, this is an FBI operation now. We need to go home,” Christina tells him. “I’m not going to sanction a suicide mission. You going down there on your own is not going to save Asha Flynn and is not going to be an end to Mejia. It’s just going to be the lost of one good man for nothing, and no one here is going to stand by and let that happen. Like it or not, you are too important to us all now and to what we do, and I’m not going to debate this with you.”

Apparently, not even his boss can stop Bryan from saving Asha by himself. When Christina and the rest of the team think that Bryan is already coming home with them, he manages to run away from his colleagues to continue his mission to rescue the woman he loves.

Interestingly, the synopsis for the episode reveals that John (Gaius Charles) actually joins Bryan on his rogue mission that risks everything to save Asha and stop Mejia’s associates before they cross the Mexico-United States border.

“Taken” Season 1 finale (episode 10), titled “I Surrender,” airs tonight at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
