A teacher and his aide were arrested after they slit the throat of a 10-year-old student to “settle scores” with the principal of his school. The incident took place in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Mohammad Hasnain, was a teacher at a madrassa (Islamic school). On Tuesday, he along with another senior student of the school, identified as Mohammad Uwais, slit the child’s throat while he was sleeping and then stabbed him in the stomach.

“There were 17 students in the hall when the attack took place. All of them were sleeping. The accused entered the room clandestinely and slit the student's throat and stabbed him. The attackers fled after a student woke up to the pandemonium and started shouting for help,” a police officer told local daily the Times of India.

Staff rushed to the hall after hearing the commotion and took the victim, Adnan, to a nearby hospital where he was fighting for his life.

Officials said the accused was holding grudges against the principal of the school as the latter scolded him often and decided to “settle scores” by attacking the victim, who was the principal’s nephew. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and said he attacked the victim to take “revenge” on the principal.

“Police took the custody of both the accused and questioned them for hours. They broke down and confessed to the crime. Hasnain told police that he was scolded by the principal and didn’t like him. Uwais also held a grudge against the principal. Both the accused were from same place and knew each other. To take revenge, they joined hands and decided to kill Adnan,” police said.

The investigation was ongoing and both the accused remained in jail as of Wednesday night.
