The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is the third season of Telltale Games’ long-running episodic game series based on “The Walking Dead” TV and comic book series. Chronologically, the game takes place in the same universe as the primary “The Walking Dead” series where a zombie apocalypse has occurred and left the remaining humans in shambles. In A New Frontier, you play as Javier Garcia, a father who must guide his family through the zombie apocalypse’s aftermath.

A New Frontier originally launched in December 2016 and functions as a fresh chapter for players unfamiliar with the series’ first two seasons. However, the game also builds off of the past seasons’ events for series fans.

As with past The Walking Dead games, individual choices you make throughout each chapter affect later events within the game season. Previous chapters included the two-parter Ties That Bind, Above The Law and Thicker Than Water.

The season finale also follows past releases from developer Telltale Games, which has relied on an episodic release schedule. With an episodic game, developers release individual chapters at a regular basis and gamers can choose either to buy individual chapters or prepay for the whole series at once.

Telltale Games also frequently has drawn from other popular franchises for other episodic releases. Earlier this year, Telltale debuted Guardians of the Galaxy: A Telltale Series, which is an episodic adventure title based on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” Marvel film series and the first episode — titled Tangled Up In Blue — released in April.

While the game doesn’t feature the cast from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” film series, the series is an original standalone adventure set in the same cinematic universe. You play as the Guardians, who must face off against Thanos and a new foe over an item that could potentially destroy the galaxy. Other Telltale releases have included games from franchises like Minecraft, the first-person shooter Borderlands series and Game of Thrones.
