Despite the wave of sympathy for the Bahamians affected by the fury of Hurricane Dorian, President Donald Trump said on Monday that the idea of allowing Bahamians fleeing the destruction into the United States is not good.

Trump’s statement came hours after his acting Customs and Border Protection chief said the idea of offering sojourn to Bahamians was ‘worth considering.”

“We have to be very careful. I don't want to allow people that weren't supposed to be in the Bahamas to come into the United States, including some very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very, very bad drug dealers. Everybody needs proper documentation,” Trump said on the White House South Lawn.

Mark Morgan, acting Customs and Border Protection chief, said although temporary protected status, or TPS, has not been granted for Bahamians hit by Dorian, that option is not ruled out either.

TPS provides legal cover to migrants fleeing countries affected by war or natural disaster. It helps them to stay and work in the U.S. for a set period.

Move them to safer areas within the islands

Instead of bringing Bahamians into the U.S. Trump suggested the struggling people can go to the "large sections" of that country not hit by the storm.

The divergent positions on Bahamians shelter came a day after more than 100 Bahamians were forced out a ferry boat before it could reach Florida.

Explaining the issue, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said they had information about a vessel preparing to embark an unknown number of passengers in Freeport. It then asked the vessel’s operator to coordinate with U.S. and Bahamian government officials in Nassau before departing.

Dorian had killed at least 44 people in the Bahamas and the storm’s fury left thousands of Bahamians homeless.

Trump flays Democrats; says he is the best

Meanwhile, Trump hit out at his rival Democratic presidential candidates at a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Monday night. Trump charged Democrats with trying to divert taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits to illegal immigrants.

Calling the Democratic camp radical, Trump said it looks apparent Americans have “no choice” but to re-elect him.

The president rolled out his regime’s achievements in many areas including a reduction in opioid deaths, positive economic numbers in which “more than 7 million Americans have been lifted off of food stamps” and “nearly 600,000 Americans entered the labor force last month alone.”

The Trump news also had the President taking full credit for reducing the unemployment rate among African-Americans to an “all-time low in the history of our country.”
