  • Donald Trump Jr. wants Sen. Mitt Romney "expelled" from the GOP
  • Romney was the only one among 53 GOP senators that voted to indict the president
  • The GOP said it will not punish Romney

A vindictive presidential son, Donald Trump Jr., wants the courageous Sen. Mitt Romney, R-UT -- the only Republican senator brave enough to vote to impeach his father Wednesday -- kicked-out of the Republican Party.

The Senate formally acquitted Trump along a party line vote. All 52 other GOP senators voted to acquit. Romney, the GOP's 2012 presidential nominee against re-electionist Barack Obama, was the only dissenter.

Speaking on the Senate floor before the vote, Romney said he'll vote to convict Trump, who he's convinced "is guilty of an appalling abuse of the public trust" by asking "a foreign government to investigate his political rival and withholding "vital military funds from that government to press it to do so."

"The grave question the Constitution tasks senators to answer is whether the President committed an act so extreme and egregious that it rises to the level of a 'high crime and misdemeanor'," Romney asked.

Romney's answer was, "Yes, he did."

This self-proclaimed "profoundly religious person" who swore to exercise impartial justice also repudiated the three lines of defense presented by the GOP in their defense of Trump.

Romney's reasoned arguments were enough to push Trump Jr. into immediately tweeting, "Mitt Romney is forever bitter that he will never be POTUS. He was too weak to beat the Democrats then so he’s joining them now. He’s now officially a member of the resistance & should be expelled from the @GOP."

Republican senators aren't listening to Don Jr., however. They quickly ruled out punishing Romney.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, said he was "surprised and disappointed" by Romney's decision, but confirmed Romney won't face a formal punishment.

"I think Senator Romney has been largely supportive of most everything we've tried to accomplish," he said shortly after the vote that acquitted Trump, Politico reports.

McConnell's sentiments were shared by Sen. Mike Braun, R-IN, who dismissed suggestions Romney be expelled from the party as "silly talk." Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-ND, also said he didn't agree with calls to remove Romney.

"I don't really know how you expel someone from the Republican Party," said Cramer.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, said there will be no formal punishment for Romney.

“We always have instances where individual senators will vote differently from the rest of the conference but I don’t think that retaliation is called for,” he said.
