KEY POINTS

  • "Valheim" players can use Portals to teleport light materials from one location to the other
  • Heavier materials must be transported via Carts or Boats
  • A system of specialized bases and Portal networks can make resource gathering easier

Harvesting raw materials in “Valheim” is simple but not necessarily easy. Players have a limited inventory and carry weight, preventing them from carrying too many items at once. This often forces players to make several trips back to their bases or outposts just to deposit materials.

This problem becomes even more apparent when players start to expand their territories. Long hauls with minimal rewards aren’t exactly fun to do.

Luckily, the game has a few mechanics that make logistics easier. These may not be obvious at first, however, since most of them are tucked behind the game’s progression wall. Here’s how to transport materials over great distances in “Valheim.”

Use Portals

The Portal system is “Valheim’s” version of fast traveling. Any Portal that’s connected to another one in the world will let players travel across any distance almost instantly. This makes Portals great for transporting materials that are unique to each biome such as Surtling Cores, Wolf Pelts and Ancient Bark.

One caveat with Portals is that they won’t teleport heavy materials such as ores. Players will have to settle with manual labor to get these precious materials back to their bases.

One way to circumvent this is to create multiple specialized bases connected by a network of Portals. Crafted materials like weapons and armor can be taken through portals, so it may be a good idea to have a place to do all of the crafting before crossing through a Portal.

Alternatively, there are tools that can help make each mining trip more fruitful.

Build Carts and Boats

Once players unlock Bronze, they will be able to craft Bronze Nails. These nails are used to create a variety of items and objects, including a pushcart and the game’s first proper seafaring vessel.

The Cart requires 10 Bronze Nails and 20 Wood to build. Players must equip a Hammer and build the Cart as they would a building piece. Ores and other objects can be placed on the Cart, greatly increasing a player’s carrying capacity.

The Karve is “Valheim’s” first proper boat. It is larger and more maneuverable than the Raft and boasts a storage container with four item slots. The game’s wind and sailing mechanics still apply to the Karve, however, and players will have to be wary of Sea Serpents that lurk beneath the ocean depths.
