KEY POINTS

  • "Valheim's" save files are found inside the AppDataLocalLow folder
  • This folder can be accessed through the Run prompt after typing Win+R
  • Create copies of the "world" and "characters" folder and place them in a separate folder

Amid news of a game-breaking bug, “Valheim” players are urged to create backups of their game worlds and characters to prevent any unwanted loss of progress.

Richard Svensson, CEO of “Valheim” developer Iron Gate AB, tweeted Friday that the current version of the hit Viking-survival game has a bug that can corrupt world files, rendering any player progress null and void. Svensson said that their team has not yet been able to find the issue’s root cause or create a suitable fix for it.

Players can head to the “C:Users[Username]AppDataLocalLowIronGateValheim” address in their computer to find “Valheim’s” save files. Head to the folder, copy the “Worlds” and “Characters” folders and paste them elsewhere to create extra copies.

However, some players may find that the “AppData” folder is hidden.

The easiest way to access this folder is by pressing the Windows key and the “R” key on their keyboards. This will open up a “Run” prompt on the lower-left side of their screens.

On the prompt’s textbox, type in “%appdata%,” then hit Enter. This will open up an Explorer window that shows the AppDataRoaming folder. Simply navigate to the address above to find the save files.

Iron Gate AB has not yet announced when it will release a new patch or if the next update will address this issue. For now, players should make sure that all files are constantly backed-up after every play session. Server hosts should be extra diligent in this regard to make sure the entire server’s progress isn’t lost by accident.

Svensson mentioned that the bug occurs more commonly if the game is exited via Alt+F4. He recommends exiting the game via the main menu instead to minimize the bug’s chances of happening.

The “Valheim” developers recently released the game’s first major patch, which contains a number of bug fixes, balance changes and quality-of-life improvements such as better server list display elements, AI improvements and more.

Players should also remember that despite its massive success, “Valheim” is still in its early access phase. The game still has unimplemented features and many more bugs are to be expected in the future once additional content starts to roll in.
