Paul Wesley of "The Vampire Diaries" thinks that the show needs to kill of characters to keep viewers guessing. CW

Say it ain’t so! While “Vampire Diaries” viewers might be attached to their favorite supernatural characters, actor Paul Wesley actually wants someone to leave the show. But fans of the hit CW series shouldn’t turn on Wesley just yet – the 32-year-old revealed that character departures are what keep things “exciting.”

Wesley’s big reveal comes right after the news of Steven R. McQueen’s planned exit. McQueen, who plays Jeremy Gilbert, has been a staple on the series since it first premiered in 2009. Despite his long run, executive producer Julie Plec announced earlier this month that the character is “ready to move on.”

“The show has been on for six years,” Wesley dished to the Hollywood Reporter. “I think, inevitably, change is a necessity. I’m not saying Steven in particular, but I think it has to happen.”

For Paul Wesley, who stars as Stefan Salvatore and directed the midseason premiere, the loss of Jeremy is something that’s necessary.

“I remember in Season 1, we lost Kayla Ewell (Vicki), and then Season 2, it was [Sara Canning’s] Aunt Jenna,” he added. “It’s what makes the show exciting. And I hate to say it, because if I was killed off – and I’m not saying he’s killed off – it would be hard for me to have an objective opinion. I’d be p----d off. But I think it’s important for a show, especially a vampire show, to maintain a level of the audience not knowing what’s happening next, we don’t know who’s going to go.”

“Vampire Diaries” viewers have certainly received their fair share of surprises throughout the past few years – from Alaric’s (Matt Davis) death, vampire resurrection and human transformation, to the reveal that the Salvatore’s have a mysterious relative named Sarah. Although Steven R. McQueen’s departure from the show won’t be one of the surprises, the way Jeremy leaves certainly will be.

“This year, we realized that Jeremy has truly grown into a man, and as a victim of so much pain at the hands of the supernatural universe, we felt like it was time for him to go out on his own and start a fresh new life – with a twist,” Plec dished to the Hollywood Reporter.

The juicy twist with Jeremy will be revealed in Season 6, episode 14 of “The Vampire Diaries.” Do you agree with Paul Wesley’s view on change? Tweet your thoughts to @AmandaTVScoop.
