  • An Iowa caucus voter changes her vote after learning Pete Buttigieg is gay
  • She votes for Elizabeth Warren instead
  • “I don’t want anybody like that in the White House,” said the woman

It's no secret mayor Pete Buttigieg -- now the leading contender for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination -- is gay. It's also no secret Buttigieg is married and that his husband's name is Chasten.

Not all people have gotten the news, however. One of them, a voter at the Iowa caucus on Monday, cast her vote for Buttigieg. But after learning the former South Bend mayor is gay and that he's married to another man, demands she change her vote.

This voter, identified only as Geert, said she was shocked to learn Buttigieg is gay and married, according to NBC News.

“Are you saying he has a same-sex partner?” said the woman to Nikki van den Heever, a Buttigieg campaign precinct captain in rural Iowa. “Are you kidding?”

“He’s married to him, yeah,” said another person, referring to Chasten Buttigieg.

“Then I don’t want anybody like that in the White House,” exclaimed Geert. “So, can I have my card back?”

She got her card back and voted for Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, instead. The resulting exchange between van den Heever and Geert was captured on video that's gotten more than three million views on Twitter. The video shows van den Heever patiently explaining the facts to Geert.

“The whole point of it is, though, he’s a human being, right?" said van den Heever. "Just like you and me, and it shouldn’t really matter."

To which Geert responded, “Why does it say in the Bible that a man should marry a woman then?”

Van den Heever replies, “I totally respect your viewpoint on this, I so totally do, but I think that we were not around when the Bible was written."

“How come this has never been brought out before?” said Geert. “I never heard it.”

Van den Heever told Geert that “I guess what I would like you to just dig deep inside and think, should it matter if it's a woman or if it's a man or if they’re heterosexual or homosexual if you believe in what they say?”

Geert was having none of this. “It all just went right down the toilet is where it just went.”

Laura Hubka, the Democratic Party chair for Howard County, Iowa said she knows Geert but didn't know she's a homophobe.

“I have known Geert for many years. I had no idea that she was a homophobe,” tweeted Hubka. “She has no social media and only has a flip phone and no cable TV.”

With just a few days left before the Iowa caucuses, it's "all hands on deck". Many people, both staff and volunteers, have come from out of state to help drum up support for their candidates in a final push for votes in the crucial early primary state.
