The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner returned Saturday for the first time in three years. Guests were treated to an eventful evening, including a memorable moment in which President Biden roasted Donald Trump and the GOP.

When Biden took the stage at the ceremony, it made him the first president in six years to accept an invitation to the event. During his time addressing the crowd, Biden garnered some laughs by throwing jabs at Trump’s presidency.

“We had a horrible plague followed by two years of COVID,” Biden joked. “Just imagine if my predecessor came to this dinner this year — now that would have really been a real coup.”

He also took a moment to roast the Republican party, which has created challenges for Biden when trying to carry out pieces of his agenda through Congress.

“There’s nothing I can say about the GOP that Kevin McCarthy hasn’t already put on tape,” he said.

Biden also poked fun at the press. “I’m really excited to be here tonight with the only group of Americans with a lower approval rating than I have,” told the room of more than 2,500 guests.

Biden went on to joke about the “Let’s Go Brandon” slogan that is used derisively by his critics.

“Republicans seem to support one fella. Some guy named Brandon. He’s having a really good year, and I’m kind of happy for him,” he said.

Biden wrapped up his remarks by acknowledging the importance of the press.

“With disinformation massively on the rise, where the truth is buried by lies and the lies live on as truth, what's clear, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, that you the free press, matter more than you ever did in the last century,” he said.

The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was previously unable to take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prior to that, former President Trump did not attend the gathering.
