UPDATE: May 30, 5:12 p.m. EDT — NBC canceled “The Village” along with “Abby’s” and “The Enemy Within,” Deadline reports.

Original story: NBC’s “The Village” is closing out its first season tonight with a big finale episode, but fans still don’t know if they’ll be seeing their favorite residents again, as the network has not yet renewed or canceled the midseason series.

“The Village” remains somewhat on the bubble when it comes to whether or not NBC may opt to bring it back for a second season, with its fate uncertain due to the ratings it has brought in. While the numbers aren’t very high, the show has been mainly steady and holding at the place it’s been throughout the season thus far. In addition, there is a passionate fanbase for the ensemble drama series, though that doesn’t usually factor into the decisions a network makes when it comes to letting a show remain on the air.

If ratings are the only thing NBC takes into consideration when it comes to canceling or renewing the series, then there may not be much hope and fans will have to say goodbye after tonight’s finale. According to TV Series Finale, the show has averaged a 0.66 in the 18-49 target demographic and 4.1 million viewers overall. Though those numbers have been consistent and showing that the audience is a reliable one for tuning in, NBC has canceled shows with better ratings in the past. Most notably, last year’s midseason freshman debut, “Rise,” starring Josh Radnor and Auli’i Cravalho, was canceled after its first 10 episodes with a 0.83 average rating and 4.418 million viewers.

Also for comparison, though they are shows that earned spots in the regular season schedule, other freshman dramas from NBC this past year were renewed but posted much stronger ratings. “New Amsterdam,” which received an early Season 2 renewal, average a 1.06 in the ratings and 5.92 million viewers, while “Manifest,” which also got a second season, averaged 1.25 in the ratings and 6.48 million viewers per episode.

Of course, whether NBC does decide to pull the plug or not, fans of “The Village” will have one last episode to get through before learning the series’ fate is determined, and it’s set to be a big one for fans to contend with. According to a synopsis for the episode, every member of the small community will be affected by the events which unfold.

“An unexpected event brings Katie (Grace Van Dien), Sarah (Michael McManus) and Nick (Warren Christie) back into each other’s orbits,” the synopsis reads. “Patricia (Lorraine Toussaint) deals with her diagnosis, which leads to an unexpected chance at re-connection for Ron (Frankie Faison). Enzo (Dominic Chianese) enlists Gabe (Daren Kagasoff) to pull off a grand gesture. Ben (Jerod Haynes) faces his future and his past.”

“The Village” Season Finale airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.
