A woman in a burning Dallas home dropped her baby out of a window into the arms of a bystander Wednesday to save the child. Several other residents also jumped from the third-floor window onto mattresses to escape the flames.

The fire began at 7 a.m. local time (8 a.m. EST) Wednesday and quickly grew to two alarms. The flames and smoke were visible from highway cameras.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said several people including the residents and bystanders went door-to-door to inform others about the fire. Three people, including a firefighter, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, the Associated Press reported.

The injured three were taken to nearby hospital. While the two residents were admitted with minor injuries, the firefighter suffered minor burns to his shoulder and arm and was released from the hospital in few hours.

The video shows residents leaping from the windows onto mattresses dragged from inside the east apartment before firefighters arrived.

Note: The video could be disturbing to some.

At least five residents leaped from the third-floor window, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Resident Byron Campbell who also caught the baby told Fox 4 he was about to leave in his car when he saw the smoke appearing from the roof. He immediately went to alert the residents of the third floor.

“I came back down to the floor. I see them getting a bed ready and everything so the people can jump out the window so we could catch them. I went straight towards the window and I saw a lady on the third floor hanging her baby out the window,” he said.

He added the baby’s mother begged him to catch the baby and he only hoped he wouldn’t drop the child.

“After she dropped the baby I hurried up and curled him up and caught him real good. And I hurried up and took him away from the fire and got him to the fire department lady,” he said.

Shuntara Thomas, the baby’s mother said it was because of the stranger that her baby was alive.

“Throwing my baby out to complete stranger that I didn’t know, but I do thank him because without him my child’s life would not have been saved. As long as I got I family I’m good. So I may not have anything else, but it teaches me not to be thankful for the material things but to be thankful for everything that I do have,” she said.

Patrick Thomas, another resident, said he broke windows to breathe.

“I hear someone banging on the door and then I open the door and see nothing but flames. There was no way out,” he said.

Officials were working to determine the cause of the fire which completely damaged the building.
