KEY POINTS

  • Apple's new watchOS 7 is coming
  • A public beta will be released this month
  • The final, more stable build won't be released until later this year

Apple announced the new watchOS 7 last month, giving users a glimpse at what they can and should expect from the new Apple Watch operating system once it gets released.

In a surprising move, Apple announced that a public beta will be released to all Apple Watch users this month. The company didn't provide exact details when it comes to release dates, but 9To5Mac speculates that it might arrive mid- or late July.

This means Apple Watch users should wait a bit more before downloading and installing the watchOS 7 public beta on their wearables. Those who will download it should be warned, however – it is still a beta and might have bugs and issues affecting the performance of the device, ultimately affecting the user experience.

That said, those who want a more stable watchOS 7 should wait longer, perhaps until fall this year. Apple might release the new Apple Watch Series 6 by that time, alongside watchOS 7's final build.

Now, what can fans expect from watchOS 7 once it gets released? Here's a quick look at the possibilities.

Shareable And Discoverable Watch Face Configurations

The watchOS 7 allows users to share watch face configurations with other users. They will also be able to discover new watch faces from the App Store and install new custom watch faces from the internet.

Sleep Tracking

Apple's watchOS 7 also introduces sleep tracking, which has long been overdue. The new feature will monitor the user's sleeping and waking times, noting when the user sleeps and wakes up every day or night. It will then give users a visualization of the previous night's sleep, as well as a chart showing weekly sleeping patterns.

Fitness app

The Activity app has been redesigned and given a new name: Fitness.

New Workout Types

Now, watchOS 7 introduces four new workout types: Core Training, Dance, Functional Strength Training, and Cooldown. Each one has a custom-built algorithm designed so that the Apple Watch will be able to keep track of a user's health while working out.

Handwashing

The Apple Watch's new watchOS version has an automatic handwashing detection feature that will help users develop proper handwashing habits.
