Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has emerged as one of the Democratic Party’s most prominent voice for unity ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

“This election is the most important in the modern history of this country,” Sanders said Monday at the Democratic National Convention.

“In response to the unprecedented crises we face, we need an unprecedented response – a movement, like never before, or people who are prepared to stand up and fight for democracy and decency – and against greed, oligarchy, and bigotry.

“And we need Joe Biden as our next president.”

Sanders’ latest speech is another example of the progressive living up to his primary promise to support Biden if he was elected the Democratic nominee. Sanders has since been seen campaigning regularly with Biden as both promote a message of unity within the party.

This supported manifested in Biden’s policy committee, which consisted of Democrats from across the political spectrum like John Kerry and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“The goals of the task force were to move the Biden campaign into as progressive a direction as possible, and I think we did that,” Sanders told NPR on July 8. “On issue after issue, whether it was education, the economy, health care, climate, immigration, criminal justice, I think there was significant movement on the part of the Biden campaign.”

While the message of unity was prevalent, the firebrand progressive also took some verbal jabs at President Trump. Perhaps his most striking comment was comparing Trump’s mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic to the Roman Emperor Nero.

“Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Trump golfs,” Sanders said. “His actions fanned this pandemic resulting in over 170,000 deaths and a nation still unprepared to protect its people.”
