JoJo is no longer holding back when it comes to what she had to overcome in order to revive her career.

The popular singer was just 13 when her smash hit "Leave (Get Out)" skyrocketed to the top of the charts in 2004. On the surface, she had it all. However, in a candid interview with UPROXX, she opened up about what it was really like behind the scenes.

The story starts with JoJo's explanation of how she got into the music industry and signed with Blackground Records' founder Barry Hankerson -- who is Aaliyah's uncle and played a major role in the late icon's success.

JoJo was on an express train to superstardom, but unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse. Despite the fact that she had written and recorded "hundreds" of songs, the label stopped releasing her music and told her she needed "to look as healthy as possible" -- which started her on a path of self-destruction.

"I ended up getting put with a nutritionist who had me on a 500-calorie-a-day diet," she said. "I was on these injections that make you have no appetite."

"I was like, 'Let me see how thin I could become because maybe then they will put out an album. Maybe I'm so disgusting that nobody wants to see me in the video and they can't even look at me.' That's really what I thought," she revealed.

This thinking propelled the "Too Little Too Late" singer into a downward spiral of drugs, alcohol, and partying because she "needed to be buzzed to feel okay."

"I should be dead," she candidly added.

Now, the 29-year-old is looking forward to the next chapter in her music career. She announced that her new album, "Good To Know," will be released in the Spring along with a tour kicking off in April.
