Party City (PRTY) is paring down the number of Halloween City pop-up stores it will open this year in light of the coronavirus pandemic, Retail Dive reported.

The company said that while it plans to hire about 20,000 temporary employees, it will only open 25 Halloween City stores this year. This is a 91% reduction from the 275 Halloween City stores it announced it was opening in 2019 and a reduction in temporary staff of 20%, Retail Dive said.

The news of the reduction in Halloween City stores comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidelines for celebrating Halloween during the pandemic. The agency said that trick-or-treating, Halloween parties and other high-risk gatherings should be avoided this year due to the coronavirus.

To keep customers safe, Party City said it will offer contactless shopping at its stores, including curbside pickup, same-day delivery, online shopping, and in-store contactless mobile payments. The company is also selling costumes and Halloween accessories in the Party City app. Masks are also required in stores.

“Despite the pandemic, we know that consumers are looking to celebrate and capture the special holiday spirit, even if it looks a little different this year,” Party City CEO Brad Weston, said in a statement. “We are confident that through our contactless options and heightened safety standards, we can deliver the much-needed joy and excitement of Halloween to our customers, while also focusing on our priority of keeping our employees safe.”
