The husband of slain Massachusetts teacher Vanessa MacCormack was arrested Tuesday for her murder, police confirmed. Vanessa, 30, was found dead inside their home following a 911 call placed by Andrew.

A second-grade teacher at Connery Elementary School in Lynn, Massachusetts, Vanessa also had a 1-year-old daughter with Andrew. Frequently posted Facebook pictures of the pair appeared to show a happy couple on their wedding day and other notable occasions. A group of photos posted by Vanessa in 2015 showed Andrew carrying Vanessa over the threshold of a newly purchased home with the caption: “Moving on to the next chapter in our lives! I love this man more than anything and I am so happy we are finally homeowners.”

Andrew, 29, was arrested following the review of surveillance footage, interviews with witnesses and analysis of phone records, police said. A preliminary report found that Vanessa’s death was the result of blunt force injuries to the head, sharp force injuries to the neck and asphyxiation, police said. Andrew pleaded not guilty Wednesday in court. The judge in the case ordered he be held without bail during his arraignment.

“Evidence suggested that the killer made concerted efforts to clean up the crime scene and dispose of related items,” a police statement said, according to People magazine.

After his wife’s death but prior to his arrest, witnesses saw Andrew entering the home to retrieve a baby chair and other items, stopping and breaking down in tears in front of the home, WBZ reported.

“The evidence suggests that her murder was a crime of domestic violence, committed in the very place where she should have been safest – her own home,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley in a statement. “It was critical during the past several days to withhold certain information as we gathered the facts and evidence, and we’re extremely grateful for the cooperation of witnesses and partner agencies who helped us build this case.”

Vanessa’s sister, Angela Masucci, recalled her being the “world’s best mother.”

“She did everything for her daughter and had so many plans for her,” said Masucci, according to WCVB-TV. “She was her world. She never missed an opportunity to bring her places to show off her beautiful baby. My heart is so broken that she is gone. I just hope her legacy may live on and we get answers about her death.”

Lynn School Superintendent Dr. Catherine Latham issued a statement on behalf of the public school system regarding Vanessa’s death.

“She was a talented, dedicated and passionate educator and a loyal, kind and compassionate friend and colleague,” said Latham. “We send our deepest sympathies to her family, friends and colleagues.”
