After “General Hospital” ran out of new episodes in May, fans have been anxiously awaiting for the soap opera to return with new episodes featuring their favorite storylines. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it appears actor Max Gail is unsure about the future of his character Mike Corbin.

Sonny Corinthos’ (Maurice Benard) father, Mike, returned to Port Charles over two years ago and quickly managed to capture the hearts of viewers. Following Mike’s arrival, his loved ones learned that he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease and struggled to accept the fact that the elder would eventually forget them.

During an interview with SoapHub, Gail told the site that he didn’t know when he would get the chance to wrap up Mike’s storyline. The 77-year-old revealed that Executive Producer Frank Valentini wants to give Mike the ending he deserves but also wants to make sure Gail’s health isn’t put in danger.

Due to his age, the actor revealed that he would be the last person to return to set because he has a higher risk of getting severely ill from COVID-19. “[Frank] said ‘Our intention at this point is to do everything we were going to do,” he explained.

While his health remains his priority, Gail admitted that he’s been making the most out of his time away from “General Hospital.”

“I have a bunch of grandkids I haven’t been able to get down to Austin to see, but the ones that are here [in the L.A. area], I’m around them, and I take a lot of care. I go with the mask if I go for a walk,” he said.

Gail was initially hired for a two-month recurring role as Mike, but producers didn’t want to let him go. Since the actor joined the cast in 2018, he has earned a Daytime Emmy for his performance.

Fans of the series will have to wait a bit longer before they find out how Mike’s story will end.

“General Hospital” airs weekdays at 3 p.m. EDT on ABC.
