  • "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke discussed author Stephenie Meyer's new novel, "Midnight Sun”
  • The novel dropping Aug. 4 retells the story of Bella and Edward from the latter's point of view
  • The director says Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are unlikely to star in a possible "Midnight Sun" movie due to busy schedules

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart may not reprise their iconic roles as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan for a "Midnight Sun" movie if it ever gets made, the director of the first “Twilight” film said.

"Midnight Sun," the latest book from author Stephenie Meyer, retells the story of Bella and Edward. But while Bella was the narrator in the first four books of the "Twilight" series, fans get to see the events unfold from Edward's point of view in the new vampire-themed romance novel.

After Meyer announced she would be releasing "Midnight Sun" on Aug. 4, "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke was asked by Entertainment Tonight if it would be possible to use the first movie to create a "Midnight Sun" film. She explained that despite the new book being a retelling of "Twilight," the new perspective would pose a problem.

"I think a re-cut would be difficult because we did stay a lot more in Bella's head," the 64-year-old director told ET. "It would be another film, which would be fun. It would be fascinating."

On the possibility of Stewart and Pattinson signing on for a future "Midnight Sun" movie, Hardwicke was not optimistic that the two stars would add the project to their already busy schedules.

"Rob is Batman now… and Kristen is in a million beautiful projects," Hardwicke said. "Who knows what would happen."

Pattinson and Stewart rose to superstardom beginning with the release of "Twilight" in 2008, with their off-screen romance also adding to the appeal of the movies.

Last year, during a guest appearance on “The Howard Stern Show”, Stewart reflected on her relationship with Pattinson, which began sometime in 2009. The actress assured fans their romance had not been a publicity stunt to promote the movie.

"We were together for years, that was my first [love]," she said.

Stewart also admitted that she would have married Pattinson if he had popped the question.

"I wanted to … yeah," she said, adding, "I don’t know, I’m not a super-duper traditionalist, but at the same time … every relationship I've ever been in, I thought that was it. I've never really been the most casual person."

Stewart and Pattinson's relationship first experienced cracks in 2012 when she was photographed getting cozy with her married "Snow White And The Huntsman" director, Rupert Sanders. Although they briefly reconciled, the two finally ended their relationship in 2013.

Pattinson revealed a year later that there wasn’t any bad blood between them.

"It’s just young people, it's normal! And honestly, who gives a s–––?" he told Esquire in 2014.
