Why Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Attended Just 2 Events During Platinum Jubilee Celebration

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle kept a low-profile while in the U.K. last week for a reason.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended just two events in public when they returned to his home country last week for Queen Elizabeth's four-day Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Prince Harry and Markle's trip to the U.K. was solely focused on Queen Elizabeth, an unnamed source who knows the couple told People.

"They aren't part of the [working] royal family anymore, and that's a decision they have taken — but maybe [the public] hasn't quite accepted that yet," the insider explained. "Yes, they were low-key. They paid their respects and went home."

The source added, "They were really here to see the Queen, and they did."

Prince Harry and Markle watched Trooping the Colour, the annual military parade held in honor of the monarch's birthday, from the Major General's Office on June 2. Since they are no longer senior working royals, they were not invited to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace or to take part in a carriage procession during the parade.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped out the following day to attend the National Service of Thanksgiving in honor of the Queen at London's St. Paul's Cathedral, where they were greeted with a mix of boos and cheers from the crowd in front of the church.

The service was followed by a lunchtime reception hosted by London's Lord Mayor Vincent Keaveny at Guildhall. All senior royals, including Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor, Zara Tindall and Mike Tindall, were in attendance. However, Prince Harry and Markle skipped the buffet lunch.

Journalist Dan Wootton mentioned the Sussexes' absence from the event when he spoke with royal pundit Lady Colin Campbell for GBNews. The royals were assigned to different rooms, according to Wootton, but one guest was "incredibly disappointed" because they had no member of the royal family in their room. They were reportedly told that it was because Prince Harry and Markle didn't show up, he claimed.

"They didn't bother to show up because they couldn't contain their rage," claimed Campbell, a biographer of Princess Diana.

Campbell suggested that Prince Harry and Markle may have been "spitting bricks" and concerned that the Platinum Jubilee had "irretrievably damaged" their brand because "the whole world now knows that they are now only third-tier royals."

Royal expert Angela Levin, author of "Harry: A Biography of a Prince," echoed the same sentiment in an interview with The Sun, saying that she believes Prince Harry may have been "upset" and felt "ignored" during the Platinum Jubilee.

"I think he would have been very, very upset that he was largely ignored," claimed Levin, who worked closely with Prince Harry for a year while writing his biography. "He still feels he's owed an apology."

But while the couple was not spotted in many Jubilee events, Prince Harry and Markle got the opportunity to introduce their daughter Lilibet to her great-grandmother during their recent trip. The 1-year-old is named for the monarch, as Lilibet was the Queen's childhood nickname.

Prince Harry and Markle quietly left the U.K. and returned to California with their two children Archie, 3, and Lilibet Sunday, an hour before the Jubilee finale.
