Vampire Diaries spinoff

“The Vampire Diaries” already has one spinoff with “The Originals,” but another could be on the way. Executive producer Julie Plec revealed that she could see characters from Season 7 being worthy of their own CW drama.

“I look at the casting of the Heretics and I think, 'Oh, they're interesting - could they be their own show?' - so it's one of those [where] we'll see,” Plec told Digital Spy.

The Heretics will be the villains of “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7, and they sound like quite a rambunctious group. They were brought out of a prison world in the Season 6 finale, so viewers haven’t seen much of them yet. However, bloodthirsty vampires with the powers of witches are sure to cause trouble for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley), especially since their leader is Salvatore matriarch Lily (Annie Wersching).

“[Lily] is using Mystic Falls as a training ground for how to teach her children how to blend,” Plec told Zap2it in July. “Unfortunately, they don’t like being told what to do. They’re hungry and they’re vampires. They’re mischievous and bored and cooped up for quite some time so Mystic Falls is sort of the brunt of the joke of the Heretics. It’s a lot of fun and a little twisted.”

It sounds like they could be a fun group to watch, but Plec isn’t really looking to run another show right now. In addition to “The Vampire Diaries and “The Originals,” she is also launching “Containment,” a new drama starring Chris Wood.

“I don't think I could actually do four shows - I'll be very honest about that,” Plec explained to Digital Spy.

Plec has previously been very candid about the struggles of running multiple shows. “The problem is that there is simply fundamentally too much work to do, even just running one show, for you to actually have your hand in all the details,” Plec told KCRW in April. “So, you slowly but surely have to figure out which details and which areas you can delegate … Then once you get a handle on that, the challenge is not giving too much up.”

If “Containment” is as successful as “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” fans will probably have to wait a while before the Heretics get their own show.

“Vampire Diaries” Season 7 and “The Originals” Season 3 premiere Thursday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. EDT, respectively, on the CW. “Containment” will premiere in winter on the CW. Do you want to see another spinoff? Sound off in the comments section below!
