In a shocking incident, a woman in India allegedly killed her newborn baby girl over the frustration of having a daughter.

The accused, a 25-year-old woman, strangled her 3-day-old baby on Dec. 29 as she was upset after giving birth to a second girl child.

The police reported the incident Saturday, which took place in the western state of Maharashtra. According to police, the woman was taken into custody from the city of Latur.

The police launched an investigation into the incident after they learned about the child's death.

"The woman, a resident of Holi in Lohara tehsil in Osmanabad, gave birth in a primary health center in Kasar Jawala village. She strangled the 3-day-old girl with a handkerchief. She was placed under arrest on Friday evening after a probe into the death," a senior police officer, identified as Kishor Kambale said, News 18 reported, citing PTI.

The woman, identified as Rekha Kishan Chabon, confessed to the crime, following which she was arrested and a case of murder was filed against her, according to PKB News. It remains unclear where the woman's husband was at the time of the killing.

The charges placed against the woman were not revealed by the police, Patrika reported [Google Translate showed].

Last year in September, a 27-year-old woman in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh allegedly killed her newborn twins. The woman, identified as Sapna Dhakad, claimed her 16-day-old sons went missing, while they were on their way to see her parents. The police then launched an investigation, checked cars, scanned footage from 250 surveillance cameras, and even inspected drains after finding inconsistencies in the woman's statement. Dhakad reportedly acted "possessed" when the police began to scrutinize her. She later revealed that she killed the children, and brought the police to the spot where she dumped her sons' bodies. The decomposing bodies of the babies were found in bushes, the police said. The mother, who was arrested, had reportedly strangled the twins to death because she was afraid her family would no longer be able to feed them after her husband lost his job.
