  • A woman and her son-in-law hanged themselves in an apparent suicide
  • The two were having an affair, according to police

A woman in the Indian state of Rajasthan and her son-in-law, both of whom allegedly engaged in an affair, have died by suicide, police revealed this week.

The two, identified as Dariya, 38, and her son-in-law, Hotaram Bhil, 25, were found hanging from a tree in Barmer district, police said Tuesday, per the Times of India.

Both left their houses Monday without informing anyone, according to authorities.

Other details regarding the incident were unclear.

The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem at a government hospital, Barmer Station House Officer Parvat Singh said.

In a similar story, another man in Rajasthan fatally shot himself and his mistress late last year after the latter allegedly blackmailed him.

The man, 30-year-old Chhagan Banjara, barged into the home of his 23-year-old lover, Mamta Banjara, in Subhash, Pali, on April 8 with a gun while the latter was having dinner with her family.

Mamta attempted to run away, but Chhagan caught her and shot her point-blank in the head, according to police. The assailant then allegedly shot himself in the head.

Both were taken to a hospital following the incident, but Mamta was declared dead on arrival. Meanwhile, Chhagan was referred to the city of Jodhpur, where he later died during treatment.

A suicide note was recovered from Chhagan's pocket, which claimed that Mamta had blackmailed him after he had left his wife for her.

Chhagan, who was married and had two children, had not lived with his wife for a long time, according to a preliminary investigation.

He allegedly wanted to marry Mamta, whom he had known for five years, but the latter and her mother were not ready as Chhagan already had children.

The two argued on several occasions as Chhagan suspected that Mamta had an affair with another man. He allegedly warned Mamta against the affair and urged her to accept his marriage proposal instead.

Authorities registered a case and launched an investigation into the shooting.

Another similar incident happened in late February, when a 25-year-old man in the state of Maharashtra allegedly hanged himself after being mentally tortured by his girlfriend.
