Would Prince Charles have married Camilla Parker Bowles if Princess Diana were still alive?

The Prince and Princess of Wales marriage didn’t turn out to be as joyous as their fairytale wedding. Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship ended in divorce, and the People’s Princess died in a tragic accident only a year after their split. In 2005, Prince Charles and Camilla got married.

One netizen wondered if Prince Charles would have still married Camilla even if Princess Diana were still alive and hadn’t lost her title. In this forum, a number of royal fans shared their thoughts about the issue.

One user, who is a past chairman of a local branch of Monarchist League of Canada, said he ”seriously doubts” that Prince Charles would marry Camilla if Princess Diana didn’t die in a tragic accident. According to him, it would be unacceptable for Prince Charles to marry someone else when he still had a living “spouse.”

“Had Diana lived, I suspect she would have continued to cause trouble for the Royal Family, her (in)fame would likely have continued and the mere fact she would be alive would be problematic for Charles in his future position as Supreme Governor of the Church of England,” Philip wrote.

He added that when Princess Diana died, Prince Charles became a “widower” to the church, not a divorcee. This made it more acceptable for him to marry Camilla.

Another royal also believes that it would have been more difficult for Prince Charles to marry Camilla than if Princess Diana had wanted to marry another man because the Duchess of Cornwall is a divorcee. She added that Princess Diana would make it even harder for the future king to push through with the wedding.

“Given her insufferable semi-public treatment of the royals, Diana would likely have become the Samantha Markle Grant of her day - a snake that is mildly poisonous and extremely annoying,” the royal fan wrote.

On the other hand, another person, who works at Regents of the University of California, wrote that he believes otherwise. According to him, Prince Charles would have definitely still ended up married to Camilla even if Princess Diana were alive.

“Camilla’s personality was quite different. She supported Charles. Diana tried to outshine Charles. In my opinion I think Charles would have ended up with Camilla regardless,” he wrote.

In related news, Princess Diana reportedly told her former butler, Paul Burrell, that she suspected Prince Charles of plotting an automobile accident to kill her. The Princess of Wales was apparently convinced that the heir to the throne wanted her dead so he could marry Camilla.
