With WrestleMania 33 just a month away, it’s been clear for a few weeks what WWE’s top superstars will be doing at the biggest pay-per-view of 2017. A match between Brock Lesnar and Goldberg has been confirmed, while The Undertaker is likely to face Roman Reigns.

The future of AJ Styles, however, hasn’t been as clear. Aside from various rumors, the longest-reigning WWE Champion of the past year didn’t have an obvious opponent for WrestleMania 33.

The latest edition of “SmackDown Live,” however, has provided the spark for Styles’ next feud.

Bray Wyatt won the WWE Championship from John Cena at WWE Elimination Chamber, but Royal Rumble winner Randy Orton refused to face his former tag team partner on April 2. After competing in a battle royal, as well as a singles match with Luke Harper, Styles was named the new No. 1 contender to Wyatt’s title.

The idea that Wyatt and Styles could meet in a singles match quickly went away, as Orton turned on Wyatt to close out “SmackDown Live,” vowing to take his championship at WrestleMania 33. It’s possible that Wyatt, Orton and Styles could compete in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship, though another option seems much more likely.

Look for Styles to face Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33. It’s a rumor that has existed since the Royal Rumble, and Tuesday’s events set the wheels in motion for a match to be made.

Styles confronted Shane on “Talking Smack” following “SmackDown Live,” demanding that he give him his previously promised title shot. Shane said he would not commit to doing so, and as the commissioner of “SmackDown Live,” he might officially take away Styles’ championship opportunity next week.

Shane has wrestled twice since returning to WWE last year. He faced The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 and competed for Team SmackDown at Survivor Series in November.

Facing Shane at WrestleMania 33, Styles won’t be at the top of the card for the first time since the summer. He’s been involved in the title picture since he won the belt from Dean Ambrose at Backlash on Sept. 11. After losing the championship to John Cena at the Royal Rumble, he was in the main event of Elimination Chamber, finishing second in the six-man WWE Championship Match.

Joining WWE in January 2016, it took Styles less than eight months to win the company’s most prestigious title. Having been the top heel on “SmackDown Live” since the WWE Draft in July, he could be headed towards a babyface turn shortly after WrestleMania 33.
