KEY POINTS

  • April's Xbox Games With Gold lineup includes relatively obscure titles
  • Some Xbox gamers are not happy that Gold isn't as good as PS Plus
  • The Xbox Games Pass is considered the better option in terms of getting free games

The Xbox Games With Gold April 2021 lineup has been revealed, and much like the last time, some gamers are left with the bitter taste of disappointment.

March’s lineup of subpar games is being followed up by even more obscure titles. April’s free Games With Gold are “Vikings: Wolves Of Midgard,” “Truck Racing Championship,” “Dark Void” and “Hard Corps: Uprising.

Some Xbox Live Gold subscribers weren’t happy with the announcement, though a number of users had already predicted that the next set of free games was not going to be anything impressive. Gamers filled the Xbox Games With Gold Twitter announcement with negative comments, with some outright saying that “PS Plus is better.”

Many comparisons to Sony’s subscription service were drawn, with some comments alluding to PlayStation’s free games for March that included a blockbuster AAA title and a popular AA game in the form of “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” and “Remnant: From The Ashes,” respectively.

While Xbox Live Gold is receiving plenty of criticism, the Xbox Game Pass remains popular among many gamers, with some considering it the superior service over anything PlayStation offers.

Other console owners, meanwhile, are simply looking forward to trying out the games in the April lineup.

The featured titles for this month’s Games With Gold have all met meager reception among both players and critics. All four titles scored an average of 6/10 for their Steam counterparts and roughly 60% on Metacritic, with the exception of “Hard Corps: Uprising,” which scored slightly better with a 75% Metacritic approval rating and an 8.5/10 on IGN when it was first released back in 2011.

Some gamers assume that the free titles that come with Games With Gold aren’t as stellar as PS Plus’ because of the Xbox Game Pass, which offers amazing deals for very low prices. Game Pass features highly-rated games such as “Doom Eternal,” “Nier: Automata” and many more. However, Xbox players still need to subscribe to Gold or the Game Pass Ultimate option if they want to play multiplayer games.

This redundancy is making some gamers call for Games With Gold to be scrapped entirely as doing so would allow Microsoft to focus their efforts and resources on improving Game Pass instead.

As of writing, Sony is yet to announce the free games for PS Plus this April.
