KEY POINTS

  • The recall stemmed from customer complaints about the metal pieces
  • There have been no confirmed reports of injuries from eating the product
  • The affected products were the ones produced last June

Home Run Inn of Woodbridge, Illinois, is recalling about 13,099 pounds of a certain frozen pizza product because they may be contaminated with "extraneous materials" or, more specifically, pieces of metal.

The issue was discovered when the company informed the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) that it had received customer complaints about finding metal on the products, the agency noted in an announcement Sunday.

The recall affects 33.5-ounce cartons of "Home Run Inn Chicago's Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza" that were produced on June 6. They have the best by date of "12/03/22" and the establishment number "EST. 18498-A" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Customers may find photos of the products' packaging here.

"These items were shipped to a distributor in Illinois and then further distributed to retailers," the agency noted. "FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers' freezers or found at distributor and retail locations. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them."

Those who are in possession of an affected product are being advised to either throw it away or take it back to where it was bought. Retailers are also being urged not to sell them.

Contamination with foreign materials may arise when an object "unintentionally" enters the product during or even before the production process, and metal is said to be the "most common foreign material."

In the case of the current recall, the announcement did not provide further details about the metal pieces that the customers found on the pizzas. But there have so far been "no confirmed reports" of any adverse reactions or injuries from eating the recalled frozen pizza product.

"FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers," the agency said.

Customers with questions about the recall may contact Home Run Inn at 630-783-9696, ext. 2151. Those with questions about food safety may also contact the USDA at 888-674-6854, via email at MPHotline@usda.gov or the agency's AskUSDA live chat feature.
