  • The girl reportedly cut all ties from the outside world due to her phone addiction
  • She was also suffering from depression

A 16-year-old girl in India hanged herself allegedly over her addiction to her mobile phone and Korean bands.

The teenager was found hanging in her room Saturday afternoon in the southern state of Kerala, Kaumudi Online reported.

In a note, the girl explained she lacked friends and scored low in her examinations as she was not able to control her addictions.

The police said the girl was a brilliant student until she regularly started using her mother's mobile phone. The girl had secured high marks in all her subjects during her 10th grade exams.

However, recently, she reportedly got so busy with the mobile phone that she cut all ties with the outside world.

The police claimed the death could have been the result of her depression, which was allegedly caused by the low marks she got in her grade 11 exams and her mobile phone obsession.

On the day of the incident, the girl's room was locked from inside, as she preferred to study alone. When her younger sister knocked on the door to offer her food, the former got no response. Following this, the girl's neighbors smashed the bedroom's window panes and found her hanging, DNA reported.

A preliminary investigation revealed that apart from her inclination toward Korean music videos, she had no other addictions such as social media platforms or games.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the incident.

In June 2021, a teenage girl set herself on fire after her mother scolded her for using mobile phones too much. The incident took place in the southern city of Hyderabad. The girl had an argument with her mother over her excessive mobile phone usage and left her home. When the parents woke up the following morning, they couldn’t find the daughter anywhere and registered a missing person complaint. The police examined CCTV footage in the area and found the girl carrying a jar of fuel with her. A while later, the police were informed a partially burnt body was located near the area. When the police reached the spot, they found a mobile phone ringing next to the teen's body. Her parents were called to the spot and they recognized the deceased as their missing daughter.
