Two debt-ridden men who were allegedly inspired by the glamourous lifestyle of gangsters in action films have stabbed a 30-year-old man to death in India.

A team of officers patrolling near a metro station in Delhi on Saturday saw the victim, identified as Dharmender Verma, an auto mechanic, with a stab wound near the abdomen. They rushed him to a hospital, but he died during treatment.

On the way to the hospital, the victim told the officers he was stabbed by two unidentified men. Police canvassed the area and found several surveillance cameras that could potentially give them leads, the Times of India reported.

"A case was registered and an investigation was taken up. Several teams were constituted and during the course of the investigation, several CCTV cameras of all possible entries and exits towards the spot of the incident were thoroughly analyzed," police deputy commissioner Usha Rangnani told NDTV.

A piece of footage showed a man holding the victim from behind while the other stabbed him in his upper abdomen, according to the Times of India. The duo then fled the scene.

After an intensive search and several raids, police were able to apprehend the two suspects. One of them, identified as Deendayal, 18, said they were out to rob people when they accidentally bumped into the victim. An altercation ensued and at one point, the victim slapped one of the suspects and even told them to walk properly. It annoyed the suspects and the confrontation turned violent.

"The accused revealed that they were influenced by the lifestyle of big gangsters as shown in movies and web series. Their families had debt and in order to earn a quick buck, they planned to rob people, for which they also ordered a dagger online and started roaming in the area to commit robberies," Rangnani said.

Last month, three minors were arrested for a similar crime in India. Inspired by gangster films, the teens allegedly stabbed a man to death and filmed the incident. The suspects initially planned on posting the video on social media, thinking it would make them popular.
