Four children are fighting for their lives in England after falling through an icy lake while playing.

Rescue efforts are also being carried out to locate two other kids who are still missing and are feared dead.

The children were playing on the icy lake at Babs Mill Park in the town of Solihull at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday when the ice broke and all of them fell into the freezing water. Emergency crews, as well as some volunteers, dove into the water to save the children but only managed to rescue four of them, LBC News reported.

The four rescued children went into cardiac arrest and were hospitalized. West Midlands fire chief Richard Stanton said in a news conference Sunday evening that they feared two more children could still be in the water. He also assured that a search has been underway for them.

"We have continued search operations in order to confirm whether there were any more in the water," Stanton said, according to BBC News.

"When the fire service arrived on scene we were made aware that there were up to six people potentially in the water," Stanton also said, as per Birmingham Mail. "After rescuing the four children we are continuing search and rescue operations in the whole lake to confirm whether there are any more in the water."

Superintendent Richard Harris of West Midlands Police told SKY News that the crews deployed to the spot would search through the water overnight, adding that it was no longer a "search and rescue operation," given the ages of the children, the chilling temperature that plunged well below zero degrees Sunday and the amount of time the children have been submerged in freezing water.

Information relating to the rescued children's ages and their current health status wasn't released by the authorities.

Visuals from the rescue operation showed officers searching the lake on inflatable dinghies using torches and smashing the ice for any trace of the missing children. One officer reportedly suffered mild hypothermia in the process and was rendered medical attention at the scene.

Meanwhile, concerned members of the community gathered on the scene as officials scoured through the lake. A drone was also spotted flying over the water as part of the search, as per a separate report from BBC News.
