A 75-year-old Texas man has been detained after he fatally shot his son who was assaulting his mother with a liquor bottle.

Officers responded to a 911 call Monday early morning from a 75-year-old man in Houston, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The elderly man told officers that his 24-year-old son, who was allegedly drunk, assaulted his wife with a liquor bottle. It was not known why the unidentified man attacked his mother.

"The male then advised dispatch that he shot his son," the law enforcement agency added.

When they reached the home, deputies found the 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was declared dead at the scene.

During the investigation, officers discovered that the son came home late after a night of drinking and got into an altercation with his mother. The noise reportedly woke the father, who tried to break up the fight. The 75-year-old then saw his son attempting to assault his wife with a liquor bottle he was holding.

Moments later, the son charged toward his father, who fatally shot him in the chest, investigators said.

"A witness was in the residence at the time of the incident and corroborated the statement of the father," officials added in the statement.

The mother, who was also in her 70s, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. She is expected to recover.

While the police detained the father, no charges have been filed against him yet, local outlet ABC 13 News reported. Authorities have referred the case to a Harris County grand jury.

The identities of the people involved in the incident were not revealed.

In another incident last week, a man fatally shot his son after mistaking him for an intruder in their Florida residence. Lindsay McGeorge, 50, told police that he fired at his 19-year-old son thinking there were burglars at his house.

"At this time no charges have been filed, however, the investigation is active and ongoing, no additional information will be released at this time," the sheriff's office had said.
