A 17-year-old boy, suffering from a rare form of tumor, had 82 teeth removed from his jaw in a three-hour-long surgical procedure. The teen suffered from complex odontoma, a rare tumor of the jaw.

Nitish Kumar, hailing from the Indian state of Bihar, had been suffering from odontoma for the past five years, reports TimesNow News.

Complex odontoma is a condition characterized by the presence of hard mass, which rarely exceeds the diameter of the tooth. The common signs and symptoms include impacted permanent teeth and swelling. This is a developmental anomaly and is usually treated via surgery.

For the teen, years of not getting proper treatment had worsened his condition. It was at a later stage that he consulted the doctors of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences who advised him surgery.

An ultrasound taken before the surgery showed his jaw swollen and face distorted. He had a total of 82 teeth in two lumps on either side of the jaw. According to doctors, Nitish has over 50 extra teeth on the bottom of his mouth.

The severity of his condition was such that the patient had to get an operation done to fix his jaw, which had suffered so much damage due to the condition.

However, the surgery ended his years-long agony as doctors managed to remove all extra teeth. The complex procedure was carried out by Dr. Priyankar Singh from the hospital's maxillofacial unit, with the assistance of Dr. Javed Iqbal.

The report quoted a senior doctor of the hospital who said it is the lack of early diagnosis and treatment that worsened the patient's condition.

Last month, a group of doctors in India had performed a rare surgery on a one-year-old child born with a birth defect called tripod deformity. According to doctors, people with this condition develop an additional rudimentary leg from the back, besides the two normal legs. In this child's case, the third leg was neurologically intact, even though the limb was relatively powerless. According to the doctors, the surgery took over six hours, during which "the rudimentary leg was detached from the nervous plexus, amputated and then the skin defect was closed."
