A man in India was arrested after he left a 9-year-old boy dangling inside a well on suspicion of phone theft.

A teen boy, who witnessed the assault Sunday, captured the footage of the incident, and shared it on social media, which soon went viral.

The suspect, identified as Ajit Rajput from Chhatarpur, a city in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested for attempted culpable homicide for hanging the unidentified minor boy dangerously in a well. Rajput reportedly executed the punishment to make the boy confess to stealing his phone, India Today reported.

The chilling video shows the suspect holding the boy by one hand inside a well, while reportedly threatening to drop him. In the video, the child can be seen hanging dangerously just above the water level. Although the child claims he is innocent and pleads with Rajput to spare his life, the man does not appear to listen, news outlet NDTV reported.

The condition of the boy, following the incident, was not clear.

The video might be distressing to some viewers.

The unidentified 14-year-old boy, who shot the video of the assault, said the cops summoned him to the station and thrashed him for capturing the video. The boy was reportedly slapped and beaten with slippers.

However, Hemant Nayak, the police-in-charge of the station has denied the claims of the witness.

"The video emerged on Tuesday, a day after the case was registered. There was no manhandling of the teenager who shot the video," a senior police official, Sachin Sharma told The Times of India.

Meanwhile, the state's Human rights commission has asked for a report about the incident involving the 9-year-old child and the allegations made by the witness.

In a similar incident earlier this year, a terrifying video of a young child dangling from the 10th floor of a high-rise building in India went viral on social media. The incident reportedly happened in an apartment in Faridabad, a city in the northern Indian state of Haryana. The video showed a woman dangling a young boy using a long cloth from her balcony so that the child could retrieve the clothes that fell on the downstairs balcony. The viral video sparked heated online discussions about child safety.
