Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in Hodgenville, Kentucky. This year marks his 213th birthday.

Lincoln was often remembered as the president who abolished slavery, led the country through the civil war and changed its history forever. Before getting into politics, Lincoln worked as a shopkeeper, surveyor and postmaster. At the age of 25, he won a seat in the Illinois Legislature. While serving in the legislature, he also worked as a lawyer. In 1845, he ran for Congress and served as a congressman for a term.

In 1860, he ran for president and won the election. He took office in March 1861. Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth who shot him at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C.
