Alabama Father Dies After Accidentally Shooting Himself And Young Daughter While Changing Diaper

A 22-year-old Alabama man died Monday after accidentally shooting himself and his daughter Saturday afternoon while going through a diaper bag.

Timothy Roshun Smith Jr. of Birmingham was shot in the leg and chest, and his daughter’s leg was injured, after the gun went off in a vehicle as he attempted to change his daughter's diaper. The young girl was taken to Children's of Alabama hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident which took place at a shopping center and outside a Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant in the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills.

Police ruled the shooting as an accident.

"This was a tragic accident and condolences from the VHPD and VHFD go out to the family involved," the Vestavia Hills police department said in a press release Tuesday.
