Apprehensive fans might be able to breathe a sigh of relief as veteran Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan showed signs of improvement after his recent surgery for hernia. The doctors at the Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai on Friday decided against a second surgery for him.

The 69-year-old actor had to undergo abdominal surgery last Saturday after he complained of continous pain. Bachchan did not get better immediately after his surgery last Saturday and in fact there appeared to be more complications, due to which his stay at the hospital was extended and a second surgery was being considered by the doctors.

The fresh surgery was supposed to happen but after the check up, doctors decided there is no need of any surgery. He is doing fine, Indian Today quoted a source as saying.

Meanwhile, the star who spent sleepless nights at the hospital (possibly due to pain), kept in touch with his fans on Twitter, updating them about his condition.

Yes its become a routine now to be awake all night almost ... best time to think, reminisce, write and contemplate ..., the actor tweeted on early Saturday Morning.

The doctors have gone home, the family is asleep in adjoining room and the night nurses and sisters are a joy to be with .. said another Tweet from him.

After the surgery, Amitabh Bachchan's son, Abhishek Bachchan tweeted thanking all the fans and well wishers: Thank you all for your wishes and prayers. The surgery went off well and dad is now in the room resting.

In 1982, Bachchan was injured while shooting for the Hindi film Coolie directed by Manmohan Desai. He had sustained a near-fatal intestinal injury when a co-star, Puneet Issar, hit him accidently in the solar plexus. That accident is the possible cause for the latest medical condition. At that time, the whole country prayed for his recovery and a couple of fans even committed suicide after learning about the actor's critical condition.

Bachchan has acted in around 180 films in a career spanning four decades in Bollywood.
