The Verizon variant of the Samsung Galaxy S3, with the model number SCH-I535, can now be updated to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Google’s operating system, using the CyanogenMod (CM) 10.1 custom ROM.

CM 10.1 custom ROM is one of the few popular Android Open Source Project-based firmware that brings a full-fledged Android experience to supported devices. However, being an unofficial firmware, CM 10.1 requires a custom recovery, such as “ClockworkMod,” or CWM, in order to flash the ROM zip.

Here is a tutorial showing how to install Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535) using CM 10.1. But, before trying out the process, users are advised to have proper backups for their personal data and settings.

Note: International Business Times cannot be held responsible if anything goes wrong. Users should proceed at their own risk.

There are a few aspects that users need to keep in mind before trying out a manual installation:

- The handset must be charged at least 80 percent.

- The computer, to be used in the process, should have the USB driver for the Samsung Galaxy S3 installed in it. You can download the relevant USB driver here.

- USB Debugging must be enabled (Setting > Developer options > USB Debugging).

- The handset should be rooted and CWM has to be installed beforehand.

- If the phone gets stuck on boot or if you experience boot loop, perform wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache a few more times before rebooting.

How To Install

Step 1: Download the CM10.1 Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean custom ROM.

Step 2: Download Google Apps.

Step 3: Connect the Samsung Galaxy S3 to PC using an USB cable.

Step 4: Copy all downloaded zip files to the SD card of your phone without extracting them.

Step 5: Disconnect the USB and turn off your phone.

Step 6: Boot into ClockWorkMod recovery in your Galaxy S3 by pressing and holding the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons simultaneously till you see the Samsung logo on the screen.

Step 7: Release all three buttons for half a second and hold them again. You will get the ClockWorkMod recovery screen. Use the Volume keys to browse between options in recovery while using the Power key to select an option.

Step 8: Perform the data wiping task. To do so, select “wipe data/ factory reset,” then select Yes on next screen to confirm your action. After that, perform a cache wipe by selecting “wipe cache partition.”

Step 9: Select “install zip from sdcard,” then select “choose zip from sdcard.” After that, find the CM 10.1 zip file and select it by pressing the Power button.

Step 10: Confirm the installation on the next screen, after which the ROM installation will be initiated.

Step 11: Once the installation process ends, repeat Step 9 but with Google Apps zip file to install the apps package.

Step 12: After the installation process is finished, go back to the main recovery menu and select “reboot system now.”

The Galaxy S4 (SCH-I535) will reboot now and boot up into the CM10.1 Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean Custom ROM.
