On Saturday, Ansel Elgort addressed sexual assault allegations after a fan named Gabby accused the actor of forcing himself on her and convincing her to remain silent, which left her with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other issues.

Gabby’s post detailing her attack resulted in a wave of backlash for the 26-year-old actor, who later took to Instagram to dismiss the woman’s claims.

In his post, Elgort denied that there was any truth to Gabby’s post. “I was distressed to see the social media posts about me that have been circulating in the past 24 hours. I cannot claim to understand Gabby’s feelings, but her description of events is simply not what happened,” he wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.

“I have never and would never assault anyone. What is true is that in New York in 2014, when I was 20, Gabby and I had a brief, legal, and entirely consensual relationship. Unfortunately, I did not handle the breakup well,” he continued.

Elgort appeared to suggest that the two had a bitter split, and he harshly cut Gabby out of his life. “I stopped responding to her, which is an immature and cruel thing to do to someone. I know this belated apology does not absolve me of my unacceptable behavior when I disappeared,” he explained.

“As I look back at my attitude, I am disgusted and deeply ashamed of the way I acted. I am truly sorry. I know I must continue to reflect, learn, and work to grow in empathy.”

Elgort’s statement comes after Gabby claimed she was sexually assaulted by Elgort days after her 17th birthday in 2014. In her Twitter post, Gabby claimed that when she met up with the “Faults in Our Stars” actor, he forced himself on her and convinced her to keep quiet about the incident because it “could ruin his career.”

“I was just a kid and was a fan of him. So when it happened instead of asking me if I wanted to stop having sex knowing it was my first time, and I was sobbing in pain, and I didn’t want to do it the only words that came out of his mouth were, ‘We need to break you in,’” she wrote.

“I WASNT there in that moment mentally. I dissociated myself and just felt like my mind was gone, and I was in shock ... I couldn’t leave, I was only 5’2” and 98 pounds.”

However, the woman claimed her silence began to take an emotional toll on her life. “I sat there for months wondering what I did wrong. Wondering why I felt so used. Years later I have PTSD, I have panic attacks, I go to therapy. Finally, I’m ready to talk about it and finally heal,” she stated.

Gabby went on to reveal that she wanted to tell her story because she wanted to let other women know that they are not alone. “It’s a lot for me to even come on here and tell my story, but I know it’s needed. There’s much more to my story I simply don’t want to post it all,” she wrote.
