A new iPhone design concept reimagines the upcoming 2019 iPhones with a camera layout different from what various leaks say it would look like.

Previous reports and leaks showed that Apple’s upcoming iPhone models for this year feature upgraded cameras, all of them placed inside a square box located at the top left corner of the rear side of the phone.

While the upgraded camera setups are likely to excite Apple fans, not everyone is happy with the square camera module design. Some called this upgraded camera design “ugly” and “boring,” indicating a certain level of disappointment with Apple’s new devices.

What if Apple decided to ditch the square camera module, follow in the footsteps of Samsung and Google, and place the cameras horizontally instead?

Horizontal array

A designer named Philip Goolkasian (via YD) thought it would be a great idea to create an iPhone concept where all three cameras are arrayed horizontally at the back of the iPhone. The design might be quite reminiscent of the Nexus 6P, but it surely looks like an Apple-designed product.

The cameras are arrayed in a linear camera module that spans the width of the iPhone model. This camera module is large enough to house more than just three cameras: it has an ample amount of space for a dual-tone flash, a microphone for videos, an ambient light sensor, a flood illuminator and a proximity sensor.

This kind of camera setup, complete with these sensors, will give the upcoming iPhone models added AR capabilities, which is perfect for Apple’s new ARKit 3, which features People Occlusion (the ability to create AR-enhanced videos in real time) and motion capture (which is shown in action via a demo of Minecraft Earth).

Of course, this goes without saying that this kind of camera module would be capable of holding an additional sensor should there only be two cameras, as is the case for the iPhone XR successor, also informally known as the iPhone 11R.

Frosted glass

The designer also reimagined the iPhone as having sandblasted glass so that it would have a “foggy, frosted quality.” This design, according to him, is resistant against fingerprints and surface blemishes.

Obviously, the leaks are all pointing to a square camera module for the upcoming 2019 iPhone models. Hopefully, Apple decides to take the other route for the 2020 iPhones and design them in such a way that would make people forget their disappointments with the square camera module.
