  • Apple announced the new Apple Watch SE
  • The new wearable is a cheaper alternative to the pricier Apple Watch Series 6
  • Apple Watch SE, however, doesn't come with all the health features of the more expensive models

Apple has unveiled two new Apple Watches, one of which is designed to appeal to a majority of the masses, particularly those who haven't tried one yet – the affordable Apple Watch SE.

The new Apple Watch SE comes packed with many features found on more expensive models, such as the new Apple Watch Series 6, but can be purchased for a fraction of the price. With configurations sold for as low as $279, Apple said the “Apple Watch SE is a lot of watch for a lot less than you expected.”

Here's a quick rundown of the new wearable's specs and features and why both non-Apple fans and longtime Apple Watch users should consider getting it.

Same essential features

The new Apple Watch SE comes equipped with the same essential features as that of the Series 6 models, save for the S6 processor, blood oxygen monitoring and ECG.

While it is powered by the S5 processor, it has the same accelerometer, gyroscope and always-on altimeter as Series 6. Apple Watch SE also features the latest motion sensors and microphone for a lot less.

Same design

Apple normally uses older designs for its iPhone “SE” models, but it didn't do that for the Apple Watch SE. The new wearable features the “same iconic design and large display as the Apple Watch Series 6,” meaning it has a display 30% larger than the one used on the Series 3. The wider display makes it easy to read the details on display.

The new wearable features an aluminum case that comes in three different finishes. It is also compatible with all Apple Watch bands, including the new Solo Loop and Braided Solo Loop.

Same health features

While the new device does not have ECG, it has Fall Detection, Emergency SOS and international emergency calling – features that could prove helpful in the event of an emergency. The new device also comes with the Noise app, which helps users take care of their hearing health.

Family Setup

The new device comes equipped with Apple's new Family Setup, which comes with watchOS 7. This feature lets users, such as kids and elderly, connect their wearable to one iPhone. This will help users monitor their kids or aging parents better.

These new features, and the $279 starting price, make the new Apple Watch SE an affordable choice. Those who don't need an ECG and all the other features in Apple Watch Series 6 can opt to get this one.
