  • A noted tipster claims that a new iMac is coming
  • Apple hasn't refreshed the iMac for a long time
  • The new iMac might feature significant jumps in specs and features over the older model

A new rumor claims that a new iMac model is coming. Is this true? If it is, what should fans, especially those looking for an iMac refresh, expect from it?

A popular Twitter tipster known only as CoinX recently predicted that a new iMac will be “coming soon” alongside a new Mac mini. The rumor tweeter didn't provide any potential feature or spec, but if the current iMac model and the new Apple products are to be considered, fans can expect a major improvement.

Cult of Mac noted that the current iMac design is “old.” The iMac was released more than a decade ago in 2007, and had its form slimmed down years later in 2012 via the tapered-edge version. That said, it's still old by today's standards, and is in real need of a refresh or redesign. Here's what fans can expect on the upcoming iMac:

A Bigger Display

The current iMac Pro (not to be confused with the iMac) has a wide 27-inch display that might not be big enough for 9To5Mac, but sure is wide enough for other users. This display is significantly larger than the21.5-inch display on the current iMac. Fans can expect to see a new base iMac with a display that's wider than what it currently has.

Better Processors

The current iMac uses a 2.3GHz dual-core Intel i5 for its base model. The upcoming iMac, if it ever arrives, can be expected to feature a newer, more powerful processer with higher clock speeds. And if rumors are to be believed, it might even feature AMD CPUs instead of Intel chips.

Bigger RAM and Better Storage

Fans should also expect to see a bump in memory and storage allocations, especially considering how well-specced newer Macs are. The current 16-inch MacBook Pro, for example, comes with 16GB of RAM as stock. The base 2017 iMac Pro, on the other hand, comes with 32GB of RAM. Apple can be expected, then, to increase the meager 8GB RAM that the current iMac has.

What's more, the current iMac still uses a hard drive for its base model. Apple could give the next iMac a boost by equipping its base model with a solid-state drive.
