The trailer for upcoming dystopian shooter videogame Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was available yesterday online following news that Activision would release the game on Nov. 13. The live-action synopsis portrays a future in which the United States' military forces have been hacked by either enemy nations or terrorists, bringing war to a 21st century Los Angeles.

Included in the trailer is a single shot of an unidentified person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, the unofficial symbol of Anonymous, shown while the narrator explains that the enemy can be anywhere and can be anyone.

The brief reference to the online hacktivist collective which has made a name for itself by fighting censorship and human rights abuse online but also for simply hacking websites for the lulz, had self-proclaimed Anonymous members responding almost immediately. Anons quickly took to Twitter to voice their reactions to the news that they might be an enemy in the latest Call of Duty title.

Was #Anonymous seriously portrayed as the #enemy in new #COD Black Ops 2????? Incredibly disturbing #OWS, wrote @ThomFrancis in a message on Twitter.

If #Anonymous are the bad guys it'll really ruin our gaming experience if we have to shoot ourselves, joked @YourAnonNews.

The Black Ops 2 trailer goes on to quote Oliver North, a retired U.S. Marine Corps officer and political commentator, who notes, I'm not worried about the guy that wants to hijack the plane; I'm worried about the guy that wants to hijack all the planes.

The entire trailer sets up a situation in the near future in which hackers, not necessarily members of Anonymous, wrest control of America's military technology and use it to terrorize the country.

One imaginary headline in the trailer reads, US Drone Hacked by Insurgents, while another states that Cyber War is unavoidable.

A number of Anonymous members worried that the trailer and the upcoming game may be part of a larger smear campaign launched by the US government to portray Anonymous as a nefarious organization and a threat to the American people.

AND THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS seriously, tweeted @blogdiva. CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 2 spent 3 mins selling #Anonymous as a violent terrorist group.

Not all Anons had the same reaction, and many appeared proud to see the Guy Fawkes mask appear in a videogame commercial.

COD Black Ops 2 featuring #Anonymous - well at least they #Expect Us, tweeted @Juna_4orty5ive

#Anonymous featured in new COD Black Ops 2 trailer - http://bit.ly/JRr521 Hijack ALL the drones! (srsly...we're kidding DHS), tweeted @YourAnonNews, a mouthpiece for Anonymous with over 500,000 followers.

Several hours later @YourAnonNews tweeted on the subject again, writing TRAILER: COD Black Ops 2 featuring #Anonymous - http://bit.ly/JRr521 Hack ALL the things!! But seriously, nice attempt to stay relevant.

Regardless of protests from Anonymous, the new Call of Duty game is sure to be a success. According to Activision, the original Black Ops had sold 23 million copies in by last September as well as 18 million DLC map pack copies for the game.

Activision has also revealed that the new game will include new features, known as Call of Duty Elite 2.0. The Current Call of Duty Elite, has over 40 million active users monthly, 10 million of which play the original Black Ops.
