There have been rumors regarding the SummerSlam 2017 main event for a few months. Brock Lesnar is expected to defend his WWE Universal Championship in the final match on Aug. 20 at Barclays Center, and he has a few viable opponents.

Following Lesnar’s successful title defense at Great Balls of Fire, it appears that he might face a few of those potential opponents at once. Kurt Angle’s latest announcement on “Monday Night Raw” indicates that Lesnar could be headed for a fatal 4-way at SummerSlam against Roman Reigns, Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman.

Angle made it clear that either Joe or Reigns will face Lesnar for the championship at SummerSlam. The potential contenders will have a match against one another on Monday to determine Lesnar’s opponent. Strowman didn’t appear on the last episode of “Monday Night Raw,” but he’s almost certain to insert himself into the title picture.

Strowman has more of a claim to a title shot than either Reigns or Joe. Strowman defeated Reigns at Great Balls of Fire, giving him two victories in three attempts against the former Shield member. Joe already got his chance to fight Lesnar, losing clean to the champ at Great Balls of Fire when he was hit with an F5.

Don’t be surprised if Strowman interferes in the match between Reigns and Lesnar, forcing Angle to include all three wrestlers in the WWE Universal Championship Match at SummerSlam.

Reigns has been in the main event of WrestleMania in each of the last three years, and WWE will likely try to find a way to get him into the last match of the August pay-per-view. It became clear that Reigns and Lesnar would eventually face off when Reigns ended The Undertaker’s career at WrestleMania 33. Paul Heyman said doing so should set up a match between Reigns and Lesnar on the episode of “Monday Night Raw” immediately following WrestleMania 33, and he echoed the same sentiment Monday night.

Joe might have been pinned by Lensar just a few days ago, but there’s no question that he has more steam than just about anyone on WWE’s main roster. Having dominated Lesnar for much of that match, Joe somehow left Great Balls of Fire looking even stronger than he had before the match began.

It’s been a while since a singles match didn’t close out SummerSlam. It last happened in 2010 when Team WWE, led by John Cena, Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan, defeated The Nexus. Cena, CM Punk and Big Show fought in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam 2012, but the match between Lesnar and Triple H closed the show.

Cena vs. Bryan was the main event of SummerSlam 2013, but Lesnar has competed in the final match of SummerSlam in every year since. He defeated Cena for the WWE Championship in 2014, and he lost to The Undertaker in 2015. Last year, Lesnar defeated Randy Orton in the main event when he won by TKO.

Since he beat The Undertaker in April, the expectation has been that Reigns would be the one to eventually take the WWE Universal Championship from Lesnar. A fatal 4-way at SummerSlam would allow Reigns to win the belt without Lesnar having to get pinned.
