General Motors confirmed the addition of a 2013 Buick Encore on Thursday morning, a brand-new crossover addition to the Buick lineup.

The Encore, a two-row, five-passenger crossover, will be introduced Jan. 10 at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Aside from announcing that the Encore will contain many of the features and amenities in Buick vehicles today, GM offered little in terms of specifics about its new addition to the Buick lineup.

But GM's teaser photo on Thursday serves as the start of a weekly uncovering of different sections of the Encore on Buick's Facebook page. The company will put a cover on the car this week and uncover one section each week leading up its on-stage unveiling at the Cobo Center in Detroit.

GM is adding the Encore to a growing lineup of Buick vehicles that include the new Verano compact luxury sedan, the bigger Regal and LaCrosse sedans and the Enclave three-row crossover.

My guess is that they're trying to target other compact crossover offerings, said Mark Boyadjis, a senior analyst at HIS, in a phone interview Thursday with the International Business Times. He noted the Acura RDX and Volvo XC60 crossovers as specific potential GM targets.

As of Dec. 1, GM year-to-date sales had gone up 14.6 percent versus the same period last year, according to AutoData. For cars, that number spiked 18.6 percent.

Boyadjis said he expects GM to offer features consistent with the Buick brand to keep capitalizing.

With Buick, they still want to retain things like their legendary quiet interiors, he said. The luxury market is more focused on comfort and capability.
