Camila Cabello’s exit from Fifth Harmony has brought the 20-year-old singer plenty of happiness after spending years in a group where she felt as if she didn’t have a voice. Now that she is a solo artist, the “I Have Questions” singer is gearing up to release an album that will be completely different compared to what fans are used to hearing from her.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, the “Crying in the Club” singer revealed that the end of her relationship with her former group also meant the beginning of a brand new sound for her as a solo artist.

Finally having a hand in the creative process, Cabello promised that there will be no doubt that her music will be a total reflection of who she is and her sound.

“The final product becomes more clear to you the more you carve at it and work on it. There were songs that five months ago were my favorite songs, and then two weeks after [we] scrapped it from the album,” she told the publication.

“Through trial and error, I’ve written enough finished songs to be able to say ‘Okay, this is me. This sounds like me and only me, and this separates me from what other people are doing.’”

One of the reasons Cabello left Fifth Harmony was because she didn’t feel comfortable singing songs she didn’t create herself. “[The songs were] mostly written by other people,” she said, reflecting on the two weeks the group spends making an album.

“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, it’s just not for me. It has to be me in order for me to be happy with the result. I get to make mistakes, correct them and learn and keep growing,” she explained.

This time, Cabello wants her new music to also touch on her roots in Miami and Cuba. The singer’s song “Havana,” which was produced by Frank Dukes, has helped her achieve her goal of celebrating a part of who she is.

“[Frank] was a big part of taking a classic part of Latin culture and combining it with something new and modern,” she explained.

“Together we made an album that's just reflective of me in every way. It's what's inside my head and my heart,” she said.

Cabello, who was born in Cuba, lived in Mexico as a child, before leaving at the age of 6 with her mother to start a new life in America. Despite her departure at a young age, the star still feels deeply connected to her Spanish roots.

During a performance on the “Today” show, the singer dedicated “Havana” to dreamers hoping to be successful one day. “This is America – the America we love, where no matter your race, your color, your beliefs or where you came from, if you have a dream, you can make it possible,” she said to the audience.

Cabello, who is nominated for a Latin Grammy for her song, “Hey Ma” with Pitbull and J Balvin, is expected to release her solo album, “The Hurting, The Healing, The Loving” this fall.
