Carl’s longtime friend Mel Brooks also shared a heartwarming message online and noted that he (Carl) was a “giant.” He also praised the comedian for his “unmatched” contributions to the entertainment industry. In a statement obtained by the Hollywood Reporter, Brooks also shared that Carl and him have been “best friends” since 1950 and shared many great moments together. He concluded his message by saying that Carl will be “greatly missed.”
"Carl was a giant, unmatched in his contributions to entertainment. I met him in 1950 when he joined Sid Caesar on 'Your Show of Shows' and we have been best friends ever since. I loved him. So whether he wrote or performed or he was just your best friend—nobody could do it better. He will be greatly missed. A tired cliché in times like this, but in Carl Reiner’s case, it is absolutely true. He will be greatly missed,” Brooks said in a statement.
George Clooney, who worked with Carl in the “Ocean’s” film series, also opened up upon learning about the demise of the icon. In his statement, Clooney said that he was “effortless” in his acting and made every room funnier and kinder.
“Carl Reiner made every room he walked into funnier, smarter, kinder. It all seemed so effortless. What an incredible gift he gave us all. His was a life well lived and we’re all the better for it. Rest in peace my friend,” Clooney said in a statement.
On the other hand, comedian Steve Martin was pretty emotional while writing about the man he considered his “greatest mentor.” Martin worked with Carl in the movie “The Jerk” and that film took Martin’s popularity to a whole new level.
Meanwhile, Dick Van Dyke, the lead actor of Carl’s “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” paid homage on social media and said that Carl’s scripts were not just funny, but they also had some meaning.
My idol, Carl Reiner, wrote about the human comedy. He had a deeper understanding of the human condition, than I think even he was aware of. Kind, gentle, compassionate, empathetic and wise. His scripts were never just funny, they always had something to say about us.

Carl Reiner was comedy genius. Often that genius made other funny people even funnier. But give him a stage and he could spin laughter out of any moment. I watched him do it time and again. His contributions to comedy are eternal. And a lovely man, as well. #ripCarlReiner
