A petition started by the fans of Chadwick Boseman is demanding the government to erect a statue of the late actor in his hometown, Anderson, S.C. The petition is also seeking to replace a Confederate memorial in the area with the late actor’s statue.

According to the person behind the petition, the Confederate monument belongs in a museum and so they want everyone to come together to honor someone from Anderson who was able to bring a “change” in the field of entertainment instead, Variety reported.

The petitioners also noted that Boseman opened doors for many young Black kids with his impeccable acting skills in movies like “Marshall” and “Black Panther.” Hence, it is imperative that the actor’s hometown should honor him for what he did for the community.

“The Confederate Monument belongs in a museum but has no right to be displayed there. I believe the community should come together to honor someone from Anderson, South Carolina, that was able to change the movie industry. He opened many doors for many young Black people with his leading roles in movies such as ‘Black Panther’ or ‘Marshall.’ It is only natural that his hometown honors what he did. There is no need for political controversy in this decision,” the petition read.

More than 11,000 people have already signed the petition that says the “local residents” want the Confederate statue in the town square removed. However, the move might not gain much traction because it is illegal to remove Confederate monuments, according to a South Carolina law.

“I suggest that the Anderson City Council should decide to replace the statue as soon as they possibly can. It would need to go through to South Carolina Senate as it is illegal to remove said Confederate Monument due to the Heritage Act (which was created as a compromise when the Confederate flag was taken down from the Statehouse),” the petition read.

The petition comes a few days after Boseman succumbed to colon cancer.

The actor starred in various films and TV shows during his career. However, he made himself known to the world by showing his amazing skills in the movie “42” where he portrayed legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson.

He made his Marvel debut in 2016’s “ Captain America: Civil War ” and played the titular character in Ryan Coogler’s “ Black Panther.”
