The staff at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center will suffer a heartbreaking loss when one of their own dies before the Season 2 finale.

According to a report by TVGuide, someone is leaving “Chicago Med” for good in a body bag. This time, it isn’t one of patients.

The report says that the exit occurs a few episodes before the season finale. It will have a tragic and profound effect on the deceased character’s colleagues. The report does not specify who is exiting the NBC series permanently.

However, this character’s exit will create a major change in the hospital’s staff. It will leave a vacancy that will allow one staff member to finally take a career defining opportunity.

Who could this character be? Although it seems like Nurse April (Yaya DaCosta) is the obvious candidate for someone who may die on “Chicago Med” right now, her death would be too obvious and would not open a vacancy for another staff member who has been itching to grow their career.

Chicago Med” returns in January 2017 with a new episode in which Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) and Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) will clash. In Season 2, episode 9, Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) assigns Charles with the task of evaluating a patient who needs a heart transplant urgently. He has to decide whether she gets the heart or not. Rhodes believes that his patient will die if she doesn’t get a heart soon.

Dr. Stohl (Eddie Jemison) will return to the hospital after taking a break in the upcoming episode.

Elsewhere in the hospital, April is going to be concerned about her uborn child while taking her medicine for a rare form of tuberculosis.

Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) will fix up two MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters.

“Chicago Med” Season 2 returns on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
